Assault is a common criminal offence, you may be charged with it when you hit someone out of anger, frustration, and you can be charged without even touch the other party, yet it is the offence that bears grave consequence. Common assault carries a maximum penalty of two years jail. Assault occasioning actual bodily harm carries five years. The penalty for maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm is seven years.
